It's been a good day in Quilt Mama land

Good Evening All,

What a nice way to spend a day - with Quilt Mama's!!!  : )  Thanks girls, & one little boy!!!  Uh, that includes Kevin too!!!  : )  He is SWEET!!!  I am SO/SEW remedial @ the Mom thing, but I am maybe working towards my Quilt "Mama" badge...?!  Milk?  Huh?  If it entails breasts or cows I can't do it!  ; )

There was shopping.  Then later this evening there was sharing, show 'n tell & simply visiting with one another.  Nice!

I was glad to spend time with those Quilt Mama's that were available.  And, those who weren't were missed. It's funny how we've all begun to associate different fabrics with different Quilt Mama's.

LA - the sewing machine trolley & window treatment book will be delivered by Jean.  Thanks Jean!

Dolores - I have the light in the garage.  I'll give it to you the next time I see you, or if you'd like to pick it up before then you're more than welcome to stop by Mt. Pleasant.

Cathy - thanks for the thread!  Awesome!!!

Mare - thanks for sharing your recipes!  And, Mo - Marianne has some food magazines/books for you!

Alright girls, take care & have a safe & Happy New Year!!!

Post-Holiday Give Aways...

Girls,

I am cleaning OUT!!!  Please click on the above pictures to see larger images.  If you are interested in anything - post a comment or send me an email.  All of these items are FREE to a good home!  : )

The first 2 pix are my newly retired travel sewing machine trolley.  It was given to me by Barb. Originally it came from the Houston Quilt Festival!  Scott replaced the 2 front wheels, as seen in picture #1.  It works well, is large & can hold a lot!

The next pix is sewing notions...anything from pins, to one of the travel applique roll-up totes that Karen uses (it's a bit faded from being in the sun), a needle threader, Greist sewing machine feet - a ruffler, walking foot, etc, etc.  These would work on any vintage sewing machine...Cathy I thought of your Pfaff.  There is also a newer generic walking foot that would fit any contemporary machine.

Then there's project bags...batik stars started from Steve's BOM once upon a time, leftover blocks, strips & bits from completed projects...could be used for kids sewing projects, small pin cushions, mini pillows, bean bags or doll quilts...  The possibilities are endless?!

Next, fabric that I'm not going to use, or have used already & am finished with!

Lastly, an assortment of printed shapes - that can be stuffed for small toys or appliqued onto sweatshirts or whatever, also there is felt for kid friendly projects, a printed Christmas tree skirt, a Hallowe'en panel, some Christmas panels, Mary Engelbreit "Queen for a Day" fabric, etc...

Thanks for helping me to reduce, reuse, recycle!  ; )

The day after the day after...

Good Evening Girls,

Wow!  Seven comments...glad to see posts from some QM's & hear of your holidays too.  ; )  We're still enjoying the holidays & continuing to celebrate here @ Mt. Pleasant.  We got some new games that we've been playing...Pachinko, Letter Flip, Feed the Kitty, A - Z, In a Pickle...  In the photo above, Scott is toying with his "new" Pachinko machine.  It's a bit NoIsY, but fUn!  ; )

Next Tuesday's trip sounds good.  We have a scheduled furnace cleaning in the AM.  We are first call, which is to be 08.  I don't know how long I'll be, but it shouldn't take too long.  I'll volunteer to hold Kevin!  : )

Enjoy your evening, Mama's!  Jean - it sounds as though you have been having a WoNdErFuL time...naps, reading, relaxing...+ Wii, Wii, Wii ALL the way home!!!  ; )  Keep it up, girl friend!!!
Piecefully, Pam

P.S.  Does Marianne's machine still need to go to Hinkletown?  If so/sew, should that be a stop on Tuesday?  And, is our *newest* quilter going along?!  Does she need any fabrics for her next project...?!  ; )

Dear Girls,

Good evening.  It's Christmas Eve.  Already...?!  Where does the time go...

I am wishing each one of you has the opportunity to still yourself in the holiday whirl.  May the gifts be wrapped, the tree festooned, the kitchen chores complete.  Make the time to sit.  Maybe take a few stitches if you want, or not if you don't.  Just take a deep breath, feel the peace & magic of this moment & believe.

Thank you for your friendship.  Enjoy your holidays.  May Santa have you on his "nice" list!  ; )
Merry Christmas Quilt Mama's!!!

Good Evening Girls,

We're home!  We got back from Momma Barb's this afternoon.  Our "sleigh" was weighed down with cheer, glee & festive loot!!!  ; )  We ALL had fun & enjoyed the time shared together.  There were no catastrophic dog events - thank goodness!!!  And, we managed alright between storms.  I will try to post some photos later.

Meanwhile, how are your festive homes doing?!  Is the tree up?  Are the presents bought?  What about the cookies...?

I have to wrap Scott's gifts yet.  And, I have 2 kinds of cookie dough made, but none baked so far. Looks like I have a "to do" list to tackle this week...

Take some time for yourself.  Don't let the holiday rush become a CRUSH!  Sip some tea & browse the net, a nice magazine or book, or perhaps take a few stitches if you get the chance.
Tuck in & keep warm!

Good Evening Girls,

How is everyone this evening?  Home safe & sound?  Some kind of weather, huh?  Last evening I wore a t-shirt & light weight jacket to walk Jingle this evening we wore ice skates!

How are your Christmas/Holiday preparations coming along in your home?  Scott & I have Barb's gifts wrapped & ready!!! What FUN!!!  ; )  We have started to packing Jingle things.  This will be his first Christmas @ Barb's.  We have our fingers crossed that there will be NO accidents.  I remember one year when Cosmo (Clark & Hilary's BIG dog) knocked over the Christmas tree!

I have cookie dough mixed, but no cookies baked yet.  I think I'll do that next week.  Did anyone see the neat-o pretzel recipe over on Pat Sloan's blog?  You use a little round pretzel, a Hershey's kiss & one m & m?  Check it out.  Seems simple & festive!

Looking forward to celebrating with everyone tomorrow evening!

Good Evening Girls,

What a soggy day.  Hope you are keeping dry & warm!

I'm looking forward to Saturday!  : )  What projects will you be-e bringing to Mo's?  I think I'll bring my Amaretto Rose for hand work, & my "new" toile & corduroy project for sewing with my Maude machine.  ; )

The blog changes to Piecefully continue!!!  What do you think - sew far...?!  Jean, thanks for your comment.  Not all of the links I got from Mare worked.  Mare - if you want to re-send the links you don't see on our blog, I'll try again to add them to Piecefully.  Are there other websites, blogs, tutorials, links, etc that anyone would like to see added?  If so, please leave them here as a comment or email them to me & I'll be happy to give it a shot!

Enjoy your evening.  Have a nice cup of tea or mug of hot chocolate & take a few stitches!

I am working on some updates to the blog...stay tuned...an old (blogger) dog learning new tricks...?! ; )

Sunday, December 7, 2008

Good Afternoon Girls,

How 'bout this weather...?! I kind of liked the snow - 'cause it occurred while we could be HOME! It covered lawns, shrubs & trees to make everything look Wintry & magical without having to be shoveled. : ) That's pretty much just PERFECT!

Lori - thanks for your blog comment. We are continuing to think of you & yours. Holidays are especially hard. If there is anything you need, please, don't hesitate to ask!

Cath - I think of you & your Mom often.

Mo - how are you doing...?

Peggy - you as well...it's a tough row to hoe, regardless of how you look @ it.

My Mom is having trouble. It's a difficult time of year for her. Which, of course, makes my heart break & my soul hurt. Thursday will be two years that Scott's Dad, "Duke," passed away. There seems to be little ease in aging. I don't think I really like that, nor did I expect it.

All of that said, I am especially grateful for a warm & loving HOME. Friends!!! Pets that bring a special something to your day, your heart & your home, especially where there are no children. It's important to count blessings & celebrate the season!

No one has said anything about Bee this week...? I know how hectic & chaotic schedules & your homes can be during this time of year! I/we will be home, & willing to host! I am working on a new, fast & hopefully "easy" project!, + my Amaretto Rose block is really coming along! You are welcome to come here! Bring something to stitch if you'd like. There is a sewing machine, irons & an assortment of books @ the ready, etc!!! I can also offer a "wrapping station" if you want to wrap Christmas gifts here. We have a table & space in the Game Room side of the basement available for use! I'll have hot water & Holiday mugs, Christmas carols, & candles glowing, + plenty of cheer to share! ; )

P.S. I didn't forget about our Saturday Sewing date @ Maureen's! ; ) This is in addition to...

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Good Evening Girls,

Here's a little bit of Christmas from our home to yours...enjoy!!! : )

Don't forget you can make Christmas shopping EASY for your spouse or kids...Johanna is keeping a "Wish List" on hand @ Cloth & Bobbin for husbands, @ Hancock's of Paducah you can create a "Wish List" & email it to your Santa, + don't forget the convenience of Amazon.com's "Wish List" capability too!!! Shop in you pj's, create then share your lists & have Santa bring what you truly want this year...if you've been good, that is...?! ; )

Good Morning Girls,

Peggy & Lois we missed you last evening! Hope you both can feel the + juju coming from the Quilt Mama's! ; )

I think we surprised Jean!!! She seemed to REALLY like her quilt!!! : ) Good job Mama's!!!

The Lamb Tavern was nice, the food was good, but best of all was the friendship & fellowship we shared around the table. I love you guys! : )

We have 2 upcoming dates set for Quilt Mama activities. Mark your calendars! First, is a Sewing Day @ Mo's. It's scheduled for Saturday 12/13, to begin @ 9:00 AM, I think. Mo, can you confirm that time, please? And next, is our Annual Quilt Mama Christmas Party!!!, to be held @ the "new & improved ; )," McCabe home!!! That date is set for Wednesday 12/17 @ 7:00 PM. Get your Secret Santa/PollyAnna gift wrapped up, & be in good spirits & ready to share QM Holiday cheer!!!

Enjoy your day, girls. Keep warm! Surf quilt sites @ work, but when home, take a couple stitches if you can! ; )

The rumors have been confirmed, ladies. There is to be a gathering of the Quiltmamas tonight, Tuesday, at the Lamb Tavern for dinner. The restraining order has been lifted since the last visit - so we can once again grace their dining room with our presence. The reservations are for 7.....if everyone would like to meet at Jean's house about 6:45...how does that sound? If anyone needs a ride, give a shout out, ok? Piece....

Hello, girls! The Thanksgiving weekend is coming to a close...hard to believe. Hope you all enjoyed your holiday. I'm happy to host on Tuesday night - see what everyone has been working on for holiday gifts. And we can talk about our sewing day in two weeks. Today is a good day to sew - just had some soup for lunch and am heading up to show Kelly how to make the gift card pouch. Enjoy the afternoon - and maybe take a nap. Anyone do any Black Friday shopping? Piece....

Hello Quilt Mama's!

Is everyone getting ready for Thanksgiving?  Do you cook or go to someone else's home?  What traditional things do you & your families do?  Do you make a turkey?  Do you stuff the bird or serve dressing on the side?  Do you have that green bean casserole?  What about pies? Pumpkin, mincemeat, pecan or some other kind of dessert altogether?  Is there football watching afterwards?  Do you sit around the table & talk, play games or sew for a bit?

I know some of us have had changes in our family dynamics, & this might be the first Thanksgiving or holiday to feel those changes.  I will be thinking of each one of you & your families.  My Mom is going to Ken's daughter's home for Thanksgiving.  Scott & I celebrate in our own crazy schedule kind of way, but not on Thursday, as is the tradition.

I have a pumpkin roll to make.  There's a 16+ lb turkey thawing in our downstairs fridge.  We will have stuffing IN the bird.  And, I'll make gravy, smashed potatoes & a vegetable.  We will celebrate Thanksgiving here @ Mt. Pleasant on either Friday or Saturday.

Whatever your plans are...may they be filled with LOVE, gratitude, a nice glass of wine or cup of tea & some kind of stitching too.  : )  Thanks for blessing me with your friendship.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING Quilt Mama's!

Good Evening Girls,

I am planning ahead, not unlike Megan from the "will work for fabric" blog...  On my Amaretto Rose block I have 3 of the 4 small flowers ready to applique to the background.  : )  I prepped the 4th & am currently working on it's unit construction.  Most of the leaves are already stitched in place, but some are just glued down & awaiting applique. If you can, get something prepped & ready for stitching following your Thanksgiving Extravaganza!!!

Hello, girls! The trip to the Art Museum today was a success! The exhibit was wonderful. We got there a little early and soaked up some art culture just wandering around. It was pretty much decided that we weren't big fans of the contemporary art, admiring instead the many Large Bathers! A lot of naked people......the Gee's Bend quilts were just amazing. We're all looking at corduroy a little differently now. The tour was great - very informative. And we had a lovely, grown-up lunch in the cafeteria. A very nice time...thanks for going. Lori - how is the family doing? Is Lindsay feeling better? We missed the mamas who couldn't come. During lunch, we talked about a sewing day/morning before Christmas.....a time to work on some gifts uninterrupted. Saturday, December 13th - how does that work? It's possible we may have it at Sacred Heart in the cafeteria - and if not there, at Casa Consuelo. We can talk about time, etc. a little later. Hope everyone has some nice Thanksgiving plans lined up. I have two school conferences on Tuesday night - so I cannot host. I made a ridiculously easy gift tonight - it's a little pouch that snaps closed and holds a gift card - really cute and I'm happy to share the pattern and directions....let me know if you want a copy and I'll drop it off. Have a lovely Sunday - hope it warms up just a bit. Take care....piece.

Good Morning Girls,

TGIF!!! I couldn't be more happy that it's Friday! I bet you're feeling the same way...?

Scott & I are planning to travel to York for a visit with my Mom, weather permitting, of course. This means, I will not be able to join the QM field trip to the Gee's Bend Exhibit.

Duty calls...I've been living in the "vomitron" for the last 8 hours...

Lord have mercy, girls.  There is SO much going on...in our home, in your homes, across the country, in the world!!!  Sometimes it's difficult to find the blessings.  I must say, however, just how THANKFUL I feel for each one of you!

Lori - my heart, & ALL of our hearts are with you & yours. I've been thinking of you, saying prayers & sending + juju too.  Please feel the wings of your friends love.

Gina, of QuiltersBuzz, needs a few prayers too.  Her home & her business has been surrounded by the California fires.

Girls, may each of us take peace in one another's friendship.  To provide some rest for your busy mind & weary soul, I hope your hands may find some solace when picking up fabric & thread, perusing a quilting book or magazine, or perhaps daydreaming of a future sewing project.

Good Morning Girls,

Thanks for having Bee last night, Jean! I was glad to have the opportunity to "drive" Marianne's sewing machine with sew/so many different foot pedals! We'll get it straightened out yet!!!

I'm anxious to hear about the Arden Theater's Gee's Bend play. Let us know what you thought about it, Mare?!

A QM "field trip" to the Art Museum is being planned for next Saturday, 11/22. So far, Jean, Marianne & myself are interested. Cathy has to check her schedule. Anyone else...?! We're going to see the Gee's Bend exhibit before it closes!!! Jean, VERY astutely, recognized the need to do this BEFORE Thanksgiving 'cause there will be NO time after Thanksgiving, as full throttle Holiday-mode kicks into HIGH gear! Stay tuned for details, & give a shout out if you'd like to go along too!!! : )

We talked about Ladies Night, & ooohed & aaahhed over items for our table (Dolores makes some gorgeous things from jelly rolls, & whips up quilts in the blink of an eye...!!!). And Jean, our AMAZING Queen Bee, has a very official sign to place on the QM table! Also, (because we have an "in") we've been given a prime table as you walk in the door! Get ready girls!!! Etsy here we come...?!?!?! ; )

Cathy - your 30's quilt is BEAUTIFUL!!! It's looks vintage, soft & is just lovely. : ) Your table runner is neat too!

Jean is finishing up odds & ends to add to the QM table for Ladies Night. Plus, she wishes she could just stay home & bowl...!!! ; )

Have a good day, ladies. Keep warm & take a few stitches when you can. Don't forget to check out the link to Pincushion Boutique, & check Sharon Schamber's site for "free" online classes.

Good Afternoon Girls,

Hey, didn't it FEEL good to see the sun shine today?!  I was just about to grow webs between my toes...  We worked outside some.  Scott is trying to finish up the last window, & Jingle & I raked leaves!

Ladies Night @ Sacred Heart sounds pretty darn GOOD!!! What's Peggy bringing for the craft table...?!  Glad to hear LA is going for a bit too.  ; )  Sorry I can't be-e there on Friday.  I've been busy getting ready for it though.  I whipped up some flannel (oooohhh!) Holiday pillow cases & finished the little, red origami purse too.  Staples had the price tags - thanks Jean!, & I bought (the wrong) safety pins a while ago that are coming in real handy now!

Are we having Bee this week?  I can host if anyone is interested, or if Jean or Cathy can't. Tuesday or Wednesday would work here.  We could price items if needed & give them to whoever will be setting up @ Sacred Heart.  Also, I have Marianne's foot pedal to her sewing machine.  Cath, I tried her foot pedal on my sewing machine & it WORKED...?!  Did you try it on yours?  Your foot pedal worked on her machine down the shore, right?  I was going to try my foot pedal on her machine next...  So, where this is going?!  If Cath or Mare has Bee this week, I'd like to bring along foot pedals to try out.  Did you get all that or am I having "crazy conversation" that's hard to follow...?!

I made some changes to our blog links, etc. girls.  Pat Sloan's blog is now actually a link to her blog & NOT her newsletter!  I've added Heather Bailey's blog too.  I also have added the Pincushion Boutique to our shopping links (Mare - do you need me to send a separate link to you in an email?).  And, has anyone used the "ruby slippers" to check out the Houston Quilt Festival? Jean, did you check out the Gee's Bend exhibit via our blog by chance...? Does anyone use the link to Nancy Halvorsen?  Are there other blogs, shopping sites or web interests you'd like to see added to our blog, ladies?

I got my flu shot on Friday.  My arm still hurts!  Take care, girls & have a good week.  : )  Enjoy your evening. Maybe have a cup of tea & sew a little.

Good Soggy Evening Girls,

I hope Lois & George are in Washington State by now!!! I bet they're having FUN with the "kids." : ) Do you think the sock monkeys made it ok...?!

So, I have begun the pre-Houston cRaZiNeSs!!! It actually started Thursday night. Scott has learned he needs to tie a string around me to keep me from flying all around when I'm about to travel or do something SUPER EXCITING!!!

One of the things I like best to do @ the Beach is FLY kites!!! The first time Scott & I made reservations to go to the Beach, I was SO, SO excited!!! It had been 7 years since I had been to the Beach, or had a vacation. I was packed & ready to GO!!! I was practically sleeping in the car the night before we were set to leave. Well, during that whole experience, Scott learned first hand the need for a string, a kite string! ; ) The phrase & idea of tying a string around me just "stuck." Scott's Mom will call or email & ask, "Does Scott have the string out yet...?!" Funny how some things stick. : )

Boonie Barb called this morning. She's wishing us Houston FUN & sending + juju. She & Charlie are in Keene, NH for a BIG Pumpkin Festival!!! They carved a pumpkin & added it to the tower...

Is the 3rd game of the World Series a wash out...? I heard there was a rain delay. Lots of people lost power in our neighborhood & surrounding areas. We've had an occasional flicker or blink, but we haven't lost power. I lit candles! Which happens to include the jack-o-lantern on our front porch.

Are your kids ready for Hallowe'en?! What are they going to dress as or be?!

Enjoy your night & stay dry!
Piecefully, Pam

P.S. Check out some new links I've added. There are some new blog links, there are some Houston links, etc. For those Quilt Mama's not making the Houston trip, when the Festival begins, you will be able to click on the Ruby Slipper link for a peek @ Festival...they usually put up the BIG winner's & sometimes will do pod casts or video casts live from the Convention Center floor.

Hi There Girls,

Good to see almost everyone last evening & gather @ Mo's!!! The tea was perfect & sew was the company. : ) How 'bout those Phillies!!! GO!!!

Mo - thanks for hosting us! Thanks for the tea too! Are you ready for Houston!?!?!? Are you making our room assignments? Would you be able to email me Dolores cell phone #, please?
Mare - thanks for emailing our departure info. I hope you get some sleep. Is everything okay in your household? I'll go to the bank tomorrow morning & have your Houston bucks ready whenever!!!

Lois - safe travels & give those grandchildren a BIG Quilt Mama hug!!! You're not giving Ainsley her TATW quilt yet, are you? What Hallowe'en FUN are you packing?! They are going to LOVE those sock monkeys!!! Take LOTS of pictures!!! Have FUN, FUN, FUN!!! ; )

Dolores - you were pretty quiet last evening. How are you?! Are you ready for Houston?! Do you want to swing by here & pick up a cutting mat to pack? We'll be home ALL weekend! Hey, thanks for sharing your Quilts 'n More magazine! How's that wild & crazy Joe Byrnes?! With the World Series in town & you out of town will he be safe...?! Let's hope Mr. & Mrs. D. keep an eye on him?!

Jean - here's a shout out to a BIG, FUN, HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY to YOU tomorrow!!! : ) I'll be CELEBRATING with you IN Houston, girlfriend!!! : ) What sewing did you go home & whip up?! Duh, pillow casing those Origami Purses is SEW much easier, no?! Thanks for your help & input!

LA - thanks for coming last evening & bringing Kevin TOO (he's precious!)!!! Glad you were surprised & had such FUN @ your 30th bash!!! I want to SEE pictures!!! Glad to hear the construction is under way & going well. How nice to plan for Thanksgiving in the new digs!!! : ) There's NO place like home.

Lori - the baby quilt is soft, pretty & nice. I REALLY like how you echo quilted around the ABC's. Did you do that free motion?! Have you looked through the 2006 Houston Quilt Festival magazine? What do you think?! Pretty amazing. I hope your Dad is okay. Your Mom too. I was glad to hear John is being so...sew supportive of your trip to Houston!!! It IS a BIG deal!!! : )

Thanks for looking @ my show 'n tell stuff. I have a certain amount of relief that the Pastel Bubbles piece has forward momentum!!! Hooray! I want to sew the last LONG seam of my Pickle Dish over the weekend. Wish me luck!

I hope those 'Mama's going to Houston will NOT be disappointed after ALL my hype. But, I just don't think it's possible!!! Thanks for reading my myriad of emails! Listening to my blather! And, looking through whatever magazines, pages & forms I passed along along the way. Mo, thanks for "organizing" us & our schedules. I appreciate it!!! ; )

I must say. I am packing MORE casual than 2006. I am wearing jeans & maybe taking along another pair too. I will wear "nicer" clothes to the Winner's Circle & to Angel though. PLEASE, pack whatever you're comfortable in!!! PLAN to have FUN!!!

I packed my sewing notions for my classes. I have that little, pink, plastic box packed SEW tight it's like a can of snakes!!! I pray they don't open it for a luggage check..?!

Cathy & Peggy - we missed you both!

Time to walk the dog!!! Thanks for the bags. ; )

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Hello, girls! Happy Tuesday. A reminder that Consuelo has graciously offered to host tomorrow evening. LA - have you recovered from Saturday evening? It was rumored that you were seen doing shots with some firemen?! Peggy - so nice to see you and hear about the baby. Amazing that she knows her ABC's already. Mare - how did Bill and Joanna make out babysitting the McCabe crowd? Pam - how did the origami purse class go? How many students did you have? Lois - what day are you leaving? You must be so excited. Feel like I haven't seen you in ages. Cath - it was nice to see you on Saturday too - sorry you won't be there tomorrow - after we come back, we'll have to switch bee to Tuesdays so you can make it. Lori - is John away - will you be able to come tomorrow? Dolores....thanks for the laughs on Saturday. Can't wait to see your show&tell from the sale. A neat 'Mom' moment last night - I'd given Erin a stack of CD's that I wanted on my iPod and she said she would do it for me. I watched her as she loaded the CD's, realized she was doing three things at once - downloading, seaching iTunes store and creating playlists - ponytail bopping as she sang along with some of my goofy songs - amazed at her complete confidence in what she was doing and her ease of doing it. That would have taken me at least an hour....10 minutes later she handed me everything - finished! Boy, I love that kid! Hope you all have a nice day.....piece.

Hey Girls,

Jean - thanks for blogging!  Sorry I missed Bee last evening.  I didn't think anyone was going.  I didn't want to be an interruption in Lori's household!  : /

I AM on Fall Break this week!  : )  And, it's been pretty EXCELLENT!!!  Yesterday morning Scott & I went into the City to check out Greenable Solutions for product information & ideas for our planned addition.  They had LOTS of stuff & it was a pretty cool store.  They had things like denim batt insulation, soy foam insulation, a solar attic fan, etc...?!

Afterwards, Scott returned home, but I stayed in the City & went to the Gee's Bend Exhibition!!!  : )  It was AMAZING!!!  I am SEW, SEW, SEW glad I went!!!  I cried.  I've been following the Gee's Bend quilts & quilter's for the last 6 years.  I've had this Exhibition on the blog calendar for more than a year already!  Ever since these quilts made history @ the Whitney Museum, I've been interested!!!  I had hoped & dreamed about the Gee's Bend quilts coming to Philadelphia.  When the Exhibition was announced, I waited...  I don't know what I expected, but the quilts were MORE remarkable than I had imagined!!!  They are FILLED with spirit! They are DYNAMIC!!!  They are PURE art. They are HONEST.  No photographs were permitted. I did take some notes & made a couple rudimentary sketches.  I went on a guided tour & was interested to learn...I had noticed many of the early quilts had quilting stitches that didn't seem to make any sense to me...?!  Some portions of a quilt were quilted with a Baptist Fan pattern, other areas had sloping rows of stitching, & still other sections had stitches that ran horizontally or vertically OR some of both. The quilting stitches were placed without any regard to the pieced design or pattern.  My mind couldn't figure it out...what & why was this so, sew?  It gave movement & interest to the quilts though!  It MADE you LOOK!!!  During the guided tour, we were told, "Piecing was done individually, but the quilting was done as a community."  What this meant was, there was NO predetermined quilting design to follow. Each woman put in quilting stitches in the portion of the quilt that was in front of her on the quilting frame.  They stitched until it was done - SEW BEE it!  The Gee's Bend quilts have some similarities with Amish quilts.  MANY ways, many times & with many different styles of interpretation, the quilt maker added variation in her quilt design - she would "turn" a block of Birds in Flight randomly here & there.  Or, a block design was repeated but the colors would be reversed, again, here & there.  Or, perhaps the quilt maker would do BOTH of these things, rotate a block AND reverse the colors.  It made me think of the Amish "humility" block.  The quilter's of Gee's Bend created interest & movement within their quilts.  They also used very BOLD colors, much like the Amish.  The Gee's Bend ladies used scraps & leftover bits.  If they didn't have enough of a pant leg to finish a quilt top, they would maybe cut the whole quilt top into quarters & add the smaller bits & pieces they did have.  Or, if they had enough, let's say, orange fabric, but the whole quilt was done using hot pink & black, they simply added the orange.  They NEEDED to make the quilt DONE so their family could be kept warm.  Each quilt is an original.  They do NOT ever repeat a design or pattern!  When asked what is the most important characteristic about a quilt, LOVE was their reply!  They like to use leftovers, scraps & pieces of clothing because they believe it gives the quilt spirit.  I could go on & on!  There are 74 (AMAZING) quilts in the exhibit!!!  In the Perlman Building there is another, much smaller, exhibition of African American quilts which are also worth visiting.  It was a day of ART & inspiration.  : )

This evening we are going to see Jason Mraz in concert.  He opened for Alanis Morissette 2 years ago, & now he IS the act!!!  : )  We're looking forward to it!

And, how 'bout those Phils?!  Wow, huh!!!  Will we be-e watching from Houston..?!

One last sewing morsel.  It involves quilting, politics & folk art.  Have you seen the quilt Denyse Schmidt has made?

Enjoy your evening & stitch when you can!

Hello, ladies! Happy Thursday! A small but mighty bee last night....Mare, Lori and myself. We talked about Houston a bit and also the upcoming vendor night at Sacred Heart. I saw Maureen yesterday afternoon - she said she will host next Wednesday - she was asking if folks could email her or blog what their schedules are in Houston - when are you taking classes/white-gloving, etc. It would be good to put this list together for everyone along with cell phone #'s. Lori has lots of cute towels made for the vendor night. I have a dozen burp cloths. I think Pam and Cathy have things as well? Mare has a bunch of pillowcases. We talked about meeting at my house on the Saturday before - November 8th - to price things and work out the details. Less than two weeks now until the trip - getting excited! Lois - when are you leaving for Seattle? Do you have your projects finished? Hoping that Grandmom Peggy and the baby are doing well. I heard that Amanda made a visit out to BM Rehab to visit her great-grandpop - awesome! LA - how is life in your thirties? Dolores - are you still quilting like mad - God bless Gracie! Pam - do you have a fall break? SJU students are off next Monday and Tuesday - we're still working. Isn't your purse class this Sunday at Cloth&Bobbin? Have fun....Cath - have you recovered from your trip - is Mike making those little animals out of towels for you in the evening? You're doing another TATW? Good for you.....hope that everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather - and those Phillies fans among us - how about those guys??!! If the series goes to game 6 or 7 - we'll be in Houston. I'll be in the hotel bar on those evenings if that's the case! Take care of yourselves - sometimes we forget that in our busy lives....piece.

Hello Girls,

I've been tweaking the blog settings a little.  One of the things I did was to make the print bigger. Does that make a difference for anyone?  Should it be bigger still?

I needed to do a blind hem on 2 of the pants I hemmed yesterday.  I have the WORST time figuring out how to do that!!!  Press, pin, fold, sew - on WHAT?!  What are you sewing ON?!  How does this work?!  Do I need to pull an ENTIRE pant leg onto the free arm of my sewing machine?! Oh, NO way!?  I read the manual.  I looked in my Sewing Encyclopedia.  Errrgrrrffff!  Google to the rescue!!!  Hooray!!! What did we ever do before the internet...?!

Yesterday when talking with Momma Barb, she gave a sage bit of advice.  She said, if I can give ONE tip to those going to Houston it's this, "Buy it when you see it!  Or, write down the booth number & make a note about what sparked your desire because you will NEVER remember!!!"

I did a bit more work on my Pastel Bubbles project today.  : )  It's feeling better.  What things are you sewing on?!

Enjoy your evening & have a GOOD tomorrow!  Bee this week, girls...?

Good Evening Girls,

How is everyone doing?  Wasn't this a GORGEOUS day?! I had wash out on the line!  ; )

Jean - thanks for hosting Bee on Wednesday.  It was a Houston Frenzy!!!  Thanks for your Show 'n Tell.  Nice!
: )

Mare - thanks for emailing blog links.  I've looked @ most of them.

Dolores - it was good to see you @ Bee!  What are you sewing?  Hey, how's Rocky been?

Lois - when do you & George leave for Washington?  What things have you been sewing?

Lori - can you tell me the date of the Vendor Night, please?  Also, the time & the location? Our dental hygeniest is interested!  Are you doing any sewing?

Cathy - are you HOME?!  How was your Cruise?!  Was it AWESOME?!  What cool things did you do?  Where were your ports of call?  How was your weather?  I bet your Mom & kids were glad to see you & Mike!  : )  Did you pick up your machine from it's "spa?"  What are you sewing?

Mo - what's new on your end, girl friend?  Are you on Fall Break?!

Peggy - I've been thinking of you, your Dad & your family. Keeping you all close to my heart. How's that grand baby?!  ; )

LA - how was your 30th?!?!?!  Did you PARTY!?  ; )  How is Kevin doing?  Are you getting any rest?  How's the house?!

I hemmed 3 more pairs of pants today.  Then, I took apart my Gertrude machine & cleaned & oiled her.  Whew - where does ALL that lint come from...?!  Talked with Momma Barb today. Her broken machine is back, & BEST of all, it's been repaired!!!  Hooray!!!  I sewed a couple more pillow cases today.  I'd like to do some Pastel Bubbles sewing tomorrow.  And, I would like to work up the courage to sew a LONG seam in my Pickle Dish project this week.  I'm feeling like maybe I can...we'll see.  Much ado over nothing!

Jingle got a bath today.  And, Scott carved a jack-o-lantern.  Fun!  I hope you're enjoying your weekend too & getting a bit of time for sewing.  ; )

Hello, ladies! Hope you all had a nice weekend. Was thinking of Cathy and Mike.....sitting on deck, umbrella drinks in hand....looking out over the ocean - boy, it would be nice to be there!!!! Anyhow - a lovely weekend here. And the Phillies won - lots of happiness in the McCabe house? The Burke house is psyched! It's time for the Houston meeting....how about here on Wednesday? If you could bring your catalogue with you - or at least the days/times of your classes - Pam had a good point about basing the sleeping arangements on who has early classes, etc....taking into account the snorers...you know who you are! Of course, we want to have the regular bee stuff too - don't forget your show & tell - and the girls who aren't going to Houston....please come and let us know if you're looking for anything in particular. Apparently, we're going to be able to find just about anything down there. Hard to believe it's nearly here. Have a happy Monday - hope to see you all on Wednesday night....piece.

Good Evening Ladies,

As you can see, I'm thinking Autumn...  Is anyone else delighted with chilly nights & the crispness in the air?  We bought apple cider @ Market - yum!  Last weekend we visited friends in Lancaster & took them a BIG pumpkin!!!  ; )  Leaves are falling.  Squirrels are busily stowing nuts for the Winter.  Mums are blooming!  Yep, Fall IS here.  Happy October 1st!

Missed getting together this evening.  Jean - I hope your car is alright.  What an inconvenience. Rats!

Cathy - when do you leave for your cruise?!?!?!  Are you ready?!  Excited?!  : )

Mare - you've been silent.  How are things on your end?  What's new?  Getting to do ANY stitching?

LA - I hear you've been sleep deprived.  How's Kevin doing?  I hope all is well & improving in your home.  I've been thinking of you!

Lor - what's shaking on your end?  How's John & the kids?  Doing any sewing?

Lois - when do you & George leave for Washington?  Do you have the monkeys packed...?!  ; )

Peggy - how is that NEW grand daughter?!  Sweet?!  : )

Dolores - what are you sewing?!  How MANY quilts have you stitched up since we last saw you?!

Maureen - how's BMC...?!  Have you cuddled in YOUR quilt yet?!

I've been stitching up pillow cases.  And, I hemmed 6 or 7 pairs of pants.  I am continuing to hand applique my Amaretto Rose project.  And, I busted out that Kaffe Fassett Pastel Bubbles project & have been doing some work on it too!

I've been trying to take advantage of ANY nice weather we get.  Hanging wash out on the line before going to bed in the morning when the weather permits.  I picked a bunch of flowers last evening ahead of today's rain!  And, I've been REALLY enjoy my walks with Jingle.  I LOVE the smells of Autumn - leaves, acorns, mums & such.  : )

I am hoping each of you is doing well.  Take the time for a cup of tea & a couple stitches.  See you sometime soon...

Hello, ladies!!! How is everything? Hope you all had a nice, although very wet weekend. How's that new baby? Mare said she was stopping to see her on Sunday evening after the Sacred Heart picnic. LA - I don't know how you do it...always hobnobbing with the influential folks, yet remaining so humble! How's the contractor doing? Lois....have you started packing yet? Did you Houston girls get the email that everything is a go! They said the electricity is back on and the damage has been or is quickly being repaired in Houston. Dolores - saw Ryan today. They were taking the senior portraits in our offices - he had his suit and tie on - so grown up! And I met Brittany. She's very cute - and very nice. Pam - how's everything with you? Work still crazy? Cath - you and Mike recover from all that work on Sunday? Mare - Joe recover from his dunk tank experience? Missed Joe Byrnes in the dunk tank this year.......wasn't quite the same. Although Joe, his brother and Joanna's Bill gave them a run for their money. The month of September went by in a blink......here's hoping October does the same.....and we'll be in Houston in no time. If you want to stop by, I'd be happy to host on Wednesday night....hope to see you then......what's everyone working on? See you soon.....piece!

We'll have to introduce her to Kevin!!! Piece to all......

What is everyone working on? Sorry I can't host this week - too much craziness going on. Getting excited about Houston.....Dolores - did you get your catalogue? If not, you can certainly look at mine - you can bring your paperwork over and we can look up your supplies list. Pam - meant to ask you - if our supplies include scissors, rotary cutter, stuff like that - do we pack this in our checked luggage? We can't take that in carry-on, right? Thanks for all the info you've been sending in the emails....very helpful. Enjoy the day....piece.

Hello, girls. Happy Friday! We missed those who weren't able to stop over on Wednesday. Everyone back to school and getting settled in? Peggy is very happy to see her students again. And - it was nice to see you too, Peg. Dolores is still getting those Hancock's packages in the mail regularly. Veronica's car was hit and totalled but, thank goodness, Veronica is fine - just a little bruised. Lois had her finished TATW quilt - it's for Ainsley's first birthday in November. So cute - and a matching, magical pillow case! Cathy made a cute little crayon roll-up from the latest Quilts & More magazine. Adorable and very easy. I made the little purse - that was pretty easy too - a good issue, ladies - and a tremendous value if you use your Jo-ann's coupon. Pam has a busy weekend lined up - she's going to a 60-40 party on Friday night - and staying over to go to the Quilt show this weekend with Mama Barb...I'm jealous. Sounds like lots of fun. Safe travels......hope everyone has a nice weekend. It seems that we're going to get some much-needed rain. Who is going down next weekend? I'm so-o-o-o looking forward to it. Went through my projects last night, deciding what to bring. Mare, Counseulo, Lori and LA - hope to see you soon! Piece.....

Good morning, girls! Happy Labor Day! Can you believe summer is wrapping up? It seems like we just celebrated July 4th...what about all those home projects I was going to do? And my intention to take the girls downtown to see the Liberty Bell and Constitution Center? Ah, well.....next year, I suppose. We had some happy and sad things happen in our extended Quiltmama family this summer. As we head into fall, some of us are starting new adventures, returning to jobs, sending the kids off to school again or continuing on our current path. I'm thankful for our good health and also the recovery of those who have had some recent bumps in the road. I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful day. We have some fun things coming up this fall (and another little baby)......here's to our colorful future quilts and learning from each other. Burkie is starting school on Wednesday night so I can host if anyone wants to come on over. Hope to see you and catch up on life. Piece.....

PS - Burkie won the Golden Spatula - there will be no living with him this year!

I'll have a machine set up if anyone wants to bring some fabric and give it a shot. I'm going to try it. Back to the grind tomorrow. A side note - the Quilting Clown Car is back! Burkie finally traded in the too-small truck - so I get the van back full-time! Yahoo! Hope to see y'all Tuesday.....piece.

Good Evening Girls,

This is quilt weather! I hope you tuck under one tonight. AND, I hope you've been able to stitch on one also. ; )

Work has been work. I MISS Summer Break. But, we're surviving.

I have been stitching on my Amaretto Rose project. I tried using a Japanese creasing tool & Elmer's School glue to prepare applique shapes. It worked! These are 2 new or newer techniques for me. Whatever works, right?

Enjoy your week & this glorious weather!

Good Morning, girls! Happy Monday! Wanted to extend lots of Quiltmama thanks to Maureen and Bill Henderson for their wonderful hospitality on Saturday at the third annual Quiltmama BBQ. A fabulous time was had by all. The food was terrific, the kids had a ball in the pool, Joe Byrnes was so entertaining and the company couldn't be beat. Baby Kevin came and ate plenty. So nice to see Peggy - and Joanna and Bill stopped by too. It was very entertaining to hear Maureen describe the various phases of the upcoming home renovation project and to watch Bill at the other end of the table with his version of what's going to happen. It was a fun, fun evening and again - many thanks!!!! Pam and Lois - you were missed. I hope you both had a nice weekend.....Pam - how's your Mom? And you are back to work today? Yuck!!! This summer went entirely too quickly. Finally admitted to myself that is is indeed more than halfway through August - broke down and went to Target for school supplies yesterday. OY! I haven't been in school in years and that still kind of depresses me a little. I finally finished the Witch Is In wallhanging last night - in time to give as a gift tonight. Nothing like a little deadline for motivation. Enjoy this lovely day...hope to see you soon.

Good Morning Girls,

Geez, there's SO much going on...a baby, the Beach, & perhaps some sewing, oh my!!! : ) It's hard to keep track of it all. I'll keep it simple & simply hope ALL are well & enjoying Summer!

While I missed bee-ing with you girls last evening, I was busy in our studio. It FELT sew good!!! I have a renewed, replenished & rejuvenated sewing perspective.

My Hershey classes were good learning experiences. I took Jo Morton & her Emma's Quilt on Friday. Saturday, it was Elsie Campbell & her Wall Flower quilt

The Quilt Odyssey Show was quite good. There was a broad spectrum of quilts in the Show, & that caused you to REALLY look! I'm glad you've enjoyed the pictures I've posted. Karen had a Retrospective of her work as a Special Exhibit within the Show. She had 13 (of the 280 she's made!!!) quilts hung. I didn't take a picture of each one. I'll try to make a slide show of the pictures I did get of her works. Just amazing!!!

These are my two class projects!

Stay cool! Enjoy your day. : ) And, take a few stitches when you get the chance!

Good morning, girls. It's been raining all night - some amazing lightening and thunder last night. Our lawn sure needed it. How is everyone? Tuesday's night's sprinkle was great! Thanks to Cathy for hosting us. Leigh Anne - hope you had fun! I'm just glad the secret is over - whew! I almost blogged a couple of times about the quilt. Dolores - we missed you. The little outfits you bought were adorable. Hope you're having a wonderful week at the shore. Peggy - how about our little Meghan Mary Carney turning 21? I'm sorry you couldn't come but a very momentous day for you. Seems like just yesterday you were making her a t-shirt quilt for high school graduation. Pam headed off to Barb's and the Hershey quilt show yesterday. Can't wait to see show & tell from the classes. Have a great time. Cath - the food was wonderful....mmmmm. You did a great job on LA's quilt. Thanks again. Mare - our return airline tickets - thanks. I guess it's official that we ARE coming back. Thanks for sharing stories about Joanna's dress shopping. Have you started looking for one for yourself yet? Lois - love the new 'do! It's just adorable. Why is it that you keep getting younger looking? Hope you're enjoying the pool - can't wait to see your TATW quilt! Consuelo....have a fabulous two weeks at the shore...hope that you get a break from your 'Consuelo' duties and get a chance to relax. Lori - the binding on the quilt is great - nice job! Hope that John is feeling better and you can get down the shore soon. LA - our thoughts are going to be with you - I know you're looking forward to actually having a lap again. I can't wait to see the newest addition to the extended Quiltmama family. This is one lucky baby to have you and Gerry for parents. Looking forward to Ger's call. Good luck - and you have lots of positive juju coming your way. Speaking of which....I got a call right before I came on Tuesday that a very special person in my life had passed away. I almost didn't come but sitting with all of you, laughing and celebrating motherhood, womanhood, quilting and friendship......it made me so appreciative of all of you. Thanks for that. Hope everyone has a nice day........piece.

Good morning, girls! Hope everyone is keeping cool. I booked the Evergreen Amish house for next year's quilt show - Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th, 2009. Thanks to Lori for finding it - it looks beautiful - and is within walking distance of the Country Quilt store and Zook's - look out! Not sure how much it's going to be per person yet - depends on how many folks go. I'll let you know - it'll be in the neighborhood of $55 - $60. Looking forward to tonight's bee. Thanks for hosting, Cath. I'm painting the living room today - so, naturally, my kitchen is packed with living room stuff. Wish me luck. I'm having trouble deciding on a shade - I just like too many of them! Enjoy your day.....drink plenty of water.......piece.

Lor, Lois, Peggy, Leigh Anne - you ALL were missed! Hope you're enjoying Summer & stitching when you get the chance!

I added a few new links to the blog. Check them out, & look @ upcoming dates too. Are there links you guys don't like or don't use? Two were "broken" & I either fixed them, as best I could, or deleted them. Are there things you'd like to see added?

Good Morning Girls!,
Here's a "peek" @ last night's Bee... THANKS for hosting us, Jean! We are a raucous bunch...

LA made 2 bags, plus a stack of "burp cloths" too! I don't know how she does it?! GOOD job!!!

Cathy made a REALLY cute t-shirt quilt. The border/sashing fabric is pink with little green flip flops. ; ) LOVE it!
Dolores...
Dolores...
Dolores...AND, she had MORE, but didn't bring them along!?!?!? She LOVES Moda, jelly rolls, charm packs & Gracie!!! EXCELLENT work, girl friend!!! : )
Lois - just BEAUTIFUL! And, she's working on a sequined Christmas stocking too. Hope George continues to feel better. At least if you're not outside in the garden, you can SEW! ; )
I missed some other photo opportunities because I didn't remember I brought along my camera! But, Marianne finished the Tie Top. It looks GREAT, Mare! I REALLY like the gold, & I agree with you that a red binding would look best. Bee is @ Mare's house next week... ; )

Jean - I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of your neat-o Lighthouse wall hanging. : / It's VERY nice! And, your hand appliqued Summer postcard blocks ROCK!!! What a SUPER job!!! : )

Peggy - we are SO glad to hear your Dad is improving. Bryn Mawr Rehab is a miraculous & progressive place! We are continuing to pray for you & yours! It was REALLY good to SEE you! Thanks for coming. : )

Lor - your kits from the Beach are nice. Are you working on anything currently? How's everyone doing in your household? Good to see you too.

Mo - you were missed. I left a few things @ Jean's for you. Enjoy the pics since you couldn't be @ Bee last evening. You missed a LOT of funnies though... ; )

Stay cool girls & take a few stitches when you can.

Say, how are you feeling?! How's that baby doing?! Cath - good for Kerry, bad for us. Will you be able to fly through? Lor - how 'bout you? Or, are you @ the Beach...? Peggy...?! Will someone @ least have information to share if Peggy isn't @ Bee, please? Lois - can you take a break from your garden...?! ; ) Mo - get out of the pool & come to Bee! We won't even care if you're dripping or wearing a bathing suit! ; )
